Lyrics

English

A sunny day in Saigon suddenly becomes colder
Because you're wearing a silk dress from Ha Dong
I still really love the color of that dress
I still really love the color of that dress
I still remember you sitting here with your short hair
But Fall lasts a long time here

I paint your portrait in my dreams1
Quickly fly back to my open arms2
You came and left suddenly, I still know
Sudden rain, sudden sun means nothing
Yet why did you leave without telling me anything?
My long sighs sound like sad echos3

Where are you, dear Fall with short hair?
Keep for me the color of that silk dress from Ha Dong4
I still really love the color of that dress
I still really love the color of that dress
I still love the color of your dress

Notes

  1. The literal translation is “My soul hastily paints a portrait” but I was told it meant that he sees this girl in his dream
  2. My original translation of “Quickly flying into the open door” was too literal.  Although “mở cửa” means “open door” in this case it means that he’s eagerly waiting for her
  3. My original translation of “Let me call my breaths a sad echo” was again, too literal.  My dad said that although “tiếng thở” was literally “breathing sounds”, in this context it means “sighs”.
  4. This line has two meaning. He is literally asking the woman to keep that silk dress but also asking her (or the Fall season? not sure) to keep the woman young and innocent.

I chose this song because it happens to be one of my dad’s favorites.  Luckily, it’s pretty repetitive so the lyrics are relatively short.  I not confident with some of my translations so I added “(?)” to signify these phrases.  Maybe I’m just being dense or looking up wrong word groups but I’ll hopefully fix these in the future.

As you can see, I still don’t know why the line spacing is doubled.  While I’m writing and in the edit post, they are single spaced.

Lyrics

English

Love is walking down the street hand in hand
It's giving each other sweet kisses
It's loving arms holding forever, never releasing
Every moment is amazing
Love is when I'm with you and have no worries
All the sorrow and worries of the day drift away peacefully
It's intensely spending all our time in splendor
Promise to always be together

(Bridge)
Although time drifts by, we're often still together
Although the days and months fade, I still won't let you go
We'll be together forever to build our dreams

(Chorus)
Stay close to me, OK?
So you can feel the love in my heart that's reserved only for you
Give me sweet devoted kisses like when we first met
The blue skies shine brightly, I hope we have each other forever

Love is waking up next to you every morning
It's every sunset passing on the streets
We're hand in hand for the rest of our lives
Promise to always be together

(Bridge)
Although time drifts by, we're often still together
Although the days and months fade, I still won't let you go
We'll be together forever to build our dreams

(Chorus)
Stay close to me, OK?
So you can feel the love in my heart that's reserved only for you
Give me sweet devoted kisses like when we first met
The blue skies shine brightly, I hope we have each other forever

Although time drifts by, we're often still together
Although the days and months fade, I still won't let you go
We'll be together forever to build our dreams

Give me sweet devoted kisses like when we first met
The blue skies shine brightly
I hope we have each other forever

Note

This is actually a more modern song than I had initially planned on translating but it’s been stuck in my head for several days now and I wanted to know what the lyrics meant. It’s a pretty normal love song but I’m glad I translated it anyway.

Also, I have no idea how to get single line spacing in WordPress so if you know, please leave me a comment.  Lastly, if you have any specific requests, let me know!

First blog post

I pretty much started this blog in a (probably) feeble attempt to improve my Vietnamese. The area I live in has the some of the largest concentration of Vietnamese in the United States. At the moment I’m unemployed and many of the job listings either require or highly recommend fluency in Vietnamese. So here I am.

I thought about doing this after actually listening to and reading the lyrics of some famous Vietnamese songs and noting how poetic some of the songs can be (even with my fairly limited understanding).  It’s my hope that I will not only gain a better understanding of the Vietnamese language, but a better appreciation for the music as well.
